Mold can be found in many different places, and it is commonly associated with damp or wet conditions. Mold grows best in humid environments, so if you notice that there are high humidity levels inside your home or office space, you may have a mold issue on your hands. There are other signs to look for as well. In this article, we’ll list some of the most common ones to help identify and eliminate any mold issue you may have.
What Are the Common Signs that You May Be Dealing With a Mold Issue?
Musty, damp smell in your home
This is one of the most common signs that you have a mold issue. If there is an unpleasant, damp smell in your home, and it doesn’t seem to go away even after airing out the rooms or using dehumidifiers, then this could be a sign of mold growth.
Mold stains on surfaces and furnishings
Notice any discolored areas in carpeting, curtains, upholstery, or other surfaces around your home where water spills are common (e.g., near bathtubs). These can often be signs of mold growing on those items. This includes higher moisture levels such as humidity or condensation building up inside windowsills for extended periods with no ventilation present to help dry them off.
Drywall cracks and holes in the wall or ceiling plaster where moisture can get inside
Mold grows best when there is plenty of water around, so if you notice drywall cracking or opening up small holes near ceilings or walls with high levels of humidity, this could indicate that mold has been present for some time as well.
Your allergies are acting up, or you have unexplained coughing spells
If you notice an increase in allergies or unexplained coughing spells, it can be a sign that mold is present. Increased breathing difficulty could also indicate the presence of mold spores and mild allergic reactions to them.
Your clothes smell like mildew, or your laundry is taking longer than usual to dry.
If you notice an unpleasant smell coming from clothes, they may have been exposed to mold. The same goes for damp clothing that’s left in the washing machine too long and doesn’t dry out well after being washed. Both could be signs of a mold issue as moisture must build upon fabrics before it can cause adverse effects such as this.
Dry and flaky skin
Mold produces mycotoxins, which produce strong allergic reactions when inhaled or touched by humans, including symptoms like dryness and cracking of the skin, as seen here.
These are just a few tips on identifying if you have a mold issue, but as we mentioned before, other signs can be present depending on the severity of the problem. Often these will progress and get worse over time, so it’s important to take action when you notice any sign at all to prevent further health risks or damage from occurring.
